What is Transformational Hypnosis, really?

Lots of people are curious about hypnosis and unsure about the process. Many people are drawn to hypnosis, or hypnotherapy, because they’re tired of feeling stuck in patterns they can’t “think” their way out of: anxiety, self-doubt, people-pleasing, old emotional wounds, or habits they can’t seem to change.

Transformational hypnosis helps you access a deeply relaxed, focused state where change becomes easier—so you can work directly with the subconscious patterns that shape how you feel and behave every day.

As a Hypnotherapist in Los Angels at The Change Practice, my role is to create a safe space where you can gently meet and update those patterns, using a blend of hypnosis, and intuitive guidance.

Step 1: A Conversation About What You Want to Change

We always begin with a conversation. Before any formal hypnosis, we’ll talk about:

  • What you’d most like to change or heal

  • How the issue shows up in your daily life and your body

  • What you’ve already tried before coming to hypnotherapy

  • What “better” would look like for you, in concrete terms

This part matters. It helps us move beyond vague goals like “less anxious” and into something more grounded, such as “I want to feel calm in my body when I speak up for myself” or “I want to trust myself instead of second-guessing every decision.”

You’ll also have a chance to share any fears or skepticism about hypnosis. Nothing is off-limits here.

Step 2: Clearing Up Myths About Hypnosis

Most people’s fears about hypnosis come from movies or stage shows. Here, I’ll clear up some misconceptions.

In real transformational hypnosis:

You stay in control. You can move, speak, or open your eyes any time.

  • You’re not unconscious. You’re in a relaxed, focused state, similar to being absorbed in a good book or in a daydream.

  • You can’t be made to do anything against your will.

Knowing this often helps your nervous system relax. When you understand that hypnosis is simply a natural state of focused awareness, it becomes much easier to let yourself experience it.

Step 3: Guided Relaxation Into a Hypnotic State

When you feel informed and ready, we begin the formal part of the session.

You’ll sit or lie down comfortably. I’ll guide you through:

  • Gentle breathing to calm the nervous system

  • Releasing physical tension from head to toe

  • Focusing your attention on soothing imagery or sensations

As you follow along, your mind naturally shifts into a more inward-focused state. Many people describe it as feeling deeply relaxed yet still aware—like on the edge of sleep, but able to hear every word. You can speak and respond throughout the process if needed. It’s a collaborative experience, not something that “happens to” you.

Step 4: Working With the Subconscious Mind

Once you’re in this relaxed, receptive state, we begin the core of transformational work.

Depending on your intention, we might:

  • Explore where a belief or pattern began (often earlier than you expect)

  • Reframe old stories or shame that no longer serve you

  • Offer clear, supportive suggestions that match how you want to feel and behave now

  • Connect you with inner resources—strength, compassion, or intuition

The goal here is to update the inner “programs” that keep you looping in the same reactions, even when you consciously want something different.

Because your critical, everyday thinking is softened in hypnosis, it’s easier for new, healthier perspectives to land and take root.

Step 5: Integration and Gentle Return

When the deeper work feels complete for that session, I guide you back to ordinary waking awareness.

You might notice that you feel:

  • Lighter, clearer, or more spacious

  • Sleepy in a pleasant, grounded way

  • Emotional in a soft, releasing way

We take a few minutes to talk about your experience—what you noticed, any insights that stood out, and how you feel now compared to when you arrived.

I may suggest simple integration practices such as:

  • Brief self-hypnosis or relaxation exercises you can do at home

  • Small daily actions that support the change you’re creating

These steps help your nervous system and subconscious mind weave the session’s work into your everyday life.

How Many Sessions Will You Need?

This varies from person to person, but many clients notice meaningful shifts within a few sessions, especially for:

  • Anxiety and chronic stress patterns

  • Confidence and self-worth

  • Old emotional wounds that keep resurfacing

  • Habits and self-sabotaging behaviors

Some people come with one clear focus and work for a short series of sessions; others choose ongoing work as a way to deepen their relationship with themselves over time. We’ll talk about what feels right for you.

Is Transformational Hypnotherapy Right for You?

This work may be a good fit if:

  • You’re self-aware but insight alone hasn’t changed your patterns

  • Talk therapy has helped, but you still feel stuck in certain loops

  • You’re open to a deeper, more intuitive approach to healing

  • You’re ready to feel calmer, more grounded, and more like yourself

You don’t have to be “good at meditating” or naturally relaxed. You only need a willingness to show up, be honest, and let yourself be guided.

Ready to Experience a Session?

If you’re curious about what transformational hypnotherapy could open up for you, I’d love to meet you.

One session can begin to shift how you relate to your mind, your body, and your life.
